Abstract
STAR TV has operated an eighty plus channel DVB compliant digital broadcast platform in Asia for the last 3 years. STAR originates 22 channels from our Broadcast Centre at Clear Water Bay in Hong Kong. We operate a total digital facility that includes 40 disk based servers for commercial replay. STAR's Systems Engineering group has made most of the mistakes possible in implementing this system. This paper describes the good and bad parts of STAR's system and the pitfalls that we found along the way.

Andrew Robertson received a BE(elec) degree form the University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia) in 1983 and an MBA from Deakin University (Melbourne, Australia) in 1994. He was Engineering Director at BTQ Channel 7, Brisbane from 1989 to 1995, Deputy Engineering Director at ATN Channel 7, Sydney from 1995 to 1996 and has been Head of Engineering at STAR TV, Hong Kong since 1996. He is a member of the SMPTE and IEEE.
