Capturing Lunar Footage and Utilization of Image Data: The HDTV Camera System Onboard the Lunar Explorer Kaguya (SELENE)

Abstract
The high-definition television (HDTV) camera onboard the Japanese lunar explorer Kaguya (SELENE), launched from JAXA's Tanegashima Space Center on September 14, 2007, succeeded in taking the first high-definition moving image of the “receding Earth” at a distance of 110,000 km from the Earth (Fig.1). The HDTV camera is now functioning without problem, capturing a great many still and moving images of famous lunar features and the Earth at a distance of 380,000 km from the Earth. The camera also succeeded in taking a picture of a “full Earth-rise” and a “full Earth-set” from the lunar pole in April 2008. The HDTV system consists of the Camera Unit and the Electricity Unit. In the Camera Unit, there are two high-definition 2.2 million-pixel cameras, one a telephoto camera and the other a wide-angle camera. The Electricity Unit enables the compression of moving images, allowing the recording of one minute of compressed data in 1GB of memory. The HDTV system can capture images from steep angles, so these data are expected to be used for the analysis of the walls of large craters called basins, for example the Orientale Basin. In addition, the number of pixel damage to CCDs mounted on the HDTV cameras is being monitored. This damage is being caused by space radiation, which includes high-energy heavy particles. The damage has been increasing incrementally. The relation between the number of damage and the location and position of the lunar explorer is also being studied.
