Abstract
There has been much discussion in the cinema industry about what constitutes an acceptable quality level for Digital Cinema. The display technology is still in its infancy, which has prevented objective testing of every aspect of digital display systems. This has led to speculation about the pixel count that will ultimately be required for the application. Pixel counts have been proposed that far exceed the requirements of the human visual system under typical theatre viewing conditions, and also exceed the capability of known interfaces. This paper presents an examination of the issues surrounding the selection of a pixel count, and presents a workable approach for supporting the delivery of multiple quality levels to the theatre, without the need for new interfaces.
