Abstract
The new features introduced in the broadcast/multicast profile of 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Rel-14/16, also known as “5G-broadcast,” represent a very promising opportunity to address the challenges of the media sector allowing, by means of a close synergy between network operators and content providers, more efficient use of both network and spectrum resources while reaching wider audiences. At present, content providers and broadcast operators are actively involved in several research projects aiming to analyze to what extent 5G can be used for large-scale transmission of TV signals to mobile/portable devices. In this respect, this article aims at providing a general overview of the potential of 5G-broadcast technologies by means of laboratory tests, coverage simulation analysis, and field trials, with a particular eye on some deployment models that could be attractive for all the involved players in the media chain. Specifically, Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI)-Centre for Research, Technology Innovation and Experimentation (CRITS) successfully tested 5G-broadcast technology with the coverage of the metropolitan area of Turin, and in the Aosta Valley with a single-frequency network.

Andrea Bertella
bio
Andrea Bertella received a degree in electronic engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, in 1995. Since 1997, he has been working at the Radiotelevisione italiana (RAI) Centre for Research and Technological Innovation, Turin, where he is involved in laboratory tests, field trials, integration of experimental systems, and interworking tests between different equipment of the first and second generation of the digital television standards (DVB-T, DVB-T2, and DVB-S2/S2X), and 5G broadcast. He is currently conducting studies and experiments on converged networks and systems. He has participated in many European projects and is the author of several technical papers.
Assunta De Vita
bio
Assunta De Vita received an MS degree in telecommunications engineering and a PhD degree in information technology for engineering from the University of Sannio, Benevento, Italy, in 2006 and 2010, respectively. Since 2012, she has been a research engineer with the RAI—Radiotelevisione Italiana Research Center, Turin, Italy. Her current scientific interests include all the aspects related to mobile and fixed networks, that is, the study of different network solutions for large-scale TV content delivery toward personal consumer devices. In this context, she is currently involved in the activities promoted by European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and 5G-Media Action Group (5G-MAG) aimed to investigate the potentialities offered by 5G technology for media companies and follow the evolution of the standardization process within the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
Alessandro Lucco Castello
bio
Alessandro Lucco Castello received a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin, Turin, Italy, in 2017. In 2018, he became a researcher at the Radiotelevisione italiana (RAI) Research Center, Turin. His current scientific interests include all the aspects related to mobile and fixed networks with a particular focus on field measurement and testing in the perspective of a possible 4G/5G mobile TV converged scenario.
Vittoria Mignone
bio
Vittoria Mignone graduated from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, in 1990. Since 1992, she has been with the Center for Research of RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana, Turin, involved in studies related to the definition of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standards for digital television by satellite, cable, and terrestrial channels. Her activities are in the field of physical layer system definition, particularly concerning advanced digital modulation and channel coding techniques for satellite and terrestrial transmissions, participating in several European research and development projects and standardization bodies. She chairs the DVB TM-S group, which develops technical specifications related to satellite transmissions, and is a member of the Steering Group of the 5G-MAG consortium, which promotes the use of 5G in the media world. She is an author of patents and technical articles in leading international journals and conferences.
Giovanni Vitale
bio
Giovanni Vitale received an MS degree in telecommunications engineering from Politecnico di Torino, Turin, Italy, in 2007. He has been employed at Radiotelevisione italiana (RAI) Research Center (RAI-CRITS), Turin, since 2008. He has been involved in the standardization process of several Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standards (DVB-SH, DVB-T2, DVB-C2, DVB-S2/S2X, and DVB-NGH), then he moved to RAI-CRITS Laboratory Tests and Field Trials Department, where he is mainly involved in studies related to 5G-broadcast and DAB+. He is also an author of several technical papers and a patent inventor.
