- Abstract
- Video streaming services must satisfy the growing consumer request for having the best video quality (VQ), anywhere, anytime. As such, and to optimize the end-user VQ for various network and end-device capabilities, over-the-top (OTT) video delivery infrastructure massively relies on adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming technology. In the common scenario, it consists of processing and storing various compressed representations of the content to stream, that is, different couples of resolution and bitrate, also known as the bitrate ladder. As both processing and storage resources are expensive, each content provider must optimize its operating and infrastructure costs. This article discusses the existing limitations in the ABR streaming landscape and introduces an innovative selective storage algorithm that tackles one of the main challenges in ABR streaming: the storage cost. This algorithm reduces up to 30% of the amount of required storage for the same VQ and remains compliant with existing optimizations in the OTT ecosystem.

Mederic Blestel is a principal video compression engineer with Media?Kind, Cesson-Sévigné, France. He joined the Envivio Compression Team, Rennes, France, in 2011. As an experienced leader, his research interests focus on various aspects of image and video processing research. He has been heavily involved in various encoding projects and now mainly focuses on new technical trends in the video compression area. Before joining MediaKind, he contributed to the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) standardization within the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunications of Rennes (IETR) Laboratory, Rennes. He received an MSc degree from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées Rennes (INSA Rennes), Rennes, in 2006.Julien Le Tanoubio
Julien Le Tanou is a principal engineer in video technology at MediaKind, Cesson-Sévigné, France, formerly Ericsson Media Solutions. In this role, he is responsible for leading research, innovation, and software development in video processing, compression, and associated encoding technologies. Since 2012, he has been with Envivio, Rennes, France, in charge of research and algorithm design for Envivio’s SW video encoding solutions. Before Envivio, he was with Orange Labs, Cesson-Sévigné, and Dolby Laboratories, Burbank, CA, where he conducted research and development for the next-generation video coding standards. He received an MS degree in signal and image processing from Telecom Paris, Palaiseau, France, in 2010, and an MSc degree in computer and electrical engineering from Institut Superieure d’Electronique de Paris, Paris, France, in 2008.Michaël Ropertbio
Michaël Ropert is currently responsible for innovation activities for video delivery solutions at MediaKind, Cesson-Sévigné, France. He led the Advanced Video Team, Ericsson (formerly Envivio), France, until 2019. His research interests are signal and image processing. He earned a PhD degree from the University of Rennes I, Rennes, France, in 1995. From 1991 to 1992, he taught applied mathematics. While at Orange Labs, Cesson-Sévigné, he worked in the areas of image and video compression for multimedia and digital television, from 1996 to 1999. He was a founding member of Envivio and led the Video Team for several years from 2000 to 2015. - Keyword(s)
