Abstract
Watch together is an application that was widely deployed during the COVID-19 global health crisis. Early results show a much longer viewing time when the feature is activated. The synchronization between the A/V streamed content, combined with the need to have a low, end-to-end latency compatible with the user interactions through integrated social media apps, is challenging, especially when watch together is deployed on all devices. The legacy approach used by existing watch together applications is to rely on a master user that will drive the other members of the group using an overlay control protocol to make sure that all the players will synchronize their playback. This article proposes a scheme that uses the built-in synchronization provided in Common Media Application Format (CMAF) low latency for both Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), enabling a subsecond time delay between clients in the same geographical location.

Patrick Gendron is the director of innovation for digital television applications at Harmonic. He joined Harmonic with the acquisition of Thomson video networks. He recently moved from managing the Harmonic Research and Development Innovation Team to the Marketing Innovation and Evangelism Team and is Harmonic’s representative at DASH Industry Forum (DASH IF), Digital Video Broadcast project, Technical Module (DVB TM), and Streaming Video Alliance. Previously, he held a senior program and engineering management position in the digital television headend domain, with international research and development management activities, at Grass Valley and Nextream. He started his career as a research engineer at the Laboratoires Electronique de Rennes (Thomson CSF), where he developed new technologies for professional video transmission over optical fiber (long-haul, single-mode links). As digital technology was maturing for television applications, he moved to Thomson Broadband Systems in a project management role for a number of first-generation digital TV products, such as satellite modulators and contribution Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) codecs. He graduated from the École Supérieure d’Electricité (Supélec) with a degree in computer science and telecommunications.
