- Abstract
- Images from cameras are usually provided in a non-linear form, often specific to a given camera manufacturer. However, tools are typically provided to convert to alternate useful forms that are independent of camera type. Of special usefulness is linear light. A linear light representation is implicitly proportional to the light seen by the camera. Exposure then becomes a multiplicative scale factor. Within the limits of the maximum exposure and noise floor, the image is inherently invariant with respect to exposure. This paper describes simple methods to verify this exposure invariance, thus providing a characterization of the useful working exposure range. The processing steps taken in making the linear representation are also implicitly verified.

bio
Gary Demos has been a pioneer in the development of computer-generated images and digital image processing for use in motion pictures. He co-founded Digital Productions (1982–1986) and was awarded an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) Scientific and Engineering Award in 1984 along with John Whitney Jr. “For the Practical Simulation of Motion Picture Photography By Means of Computer-Generated Images.” Demos also founded DemoGraFX (1988–2003) and Image Essence LLC, Perris, CA (since 2005). Demos is the holder of approximately 100 patents.David Reisnerbio
David Reisner received the 2014 Academy Technical Achievement Award, the 2014 Hollywood Post Alliance Judges Award for Creativity and Innovation, and was recognized by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with a prestigious Prime Time EMMY Engineering Award as a co-designer of the ASC CDL—now used in the workflow of nearly every motion picture, scripted TV, and visual effects turnover worldwide. He was lead designer and co-producer of the ASC-DCI StEM Standard Evaluation Material, which set the quality requirement to switch the world to the digital cinema system. Reisner is a SMPTE Fellow, the Vice-Chair, and the Founding-Secretary of the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council, and an ASC Associate. Reisner also vice-chaired the SMPTE Digital Cinema Mastering and Security committees. - Copyright
