- Abstract
- A group of professionals working in dailies around the world have identified a need for consistency across the industry, forming a working group to create open databases and references. Dailies are a part of the production process that may be done in one or more regions, often utilizing freelance talent and requiring a significant amount of time and resources for specialized training. Therefore, streamlining this part of a workflow has major cost-saving potential. Focusing initially on Dailies Quality Control (QC), the working group has identified and built a database of taxonomy and definitions as well as determined best practices and recommendations that are consistent and applicable to all projects regardless of studio, type, location, or scale.

Another example could be “operator cuts mid shot.” Instead, you could say “camera cuts mid shot,” effectively making the reporting about the issue, not the operator. The issue may have been caused by a battery running out or many other variables of on-set production. QC needs to balance subjectivity and objectivity, and this methodology takes some of that stress off the operators and helps maintain clear communication. Conclusion The efforts of the Dailies QC Working Group are a first step toward implementing a consistent, sustainable dailies QC workflow that is collaboratively defined by a broad group of industry professionals. Universal adoption of this terminology, taxonomy, best practice, and general framework means that more software can be developed to automate basic tracking and QC work. Additionally, the people who need to know about things going wrong get the right information more efficiently, and productions can easily outsource work to freelancers and global networks who all understand the core structure and responsibilities of the tasks. The Dailies QC Working Group is the beginning of a conversation about how we can build a solid foundation for the future of dailies as an aspect of filmmaking. Globally, dailies are becoming a crucial part of the future of the screen industry, with timeand cost-saving opportunities to be realized across the sector. As both big studios and independent companies develop their own version of a more automated workf low, we aim to open up the lines of communication, break down the silos of innovation, and allow more people to harness the collaborative efforts of the dailies teams and their work to benefit future productions. With these automation and standardization efforts happening within different studios, now is a great time to start communicating between these groups to develop more consistent workf lows. There is still a great amount of collaborative work to be done to realize a standard within dailies processes. We believe that this is the first step outside of any particular company that aims to future-proof key components of the dailies workf low, save money and time, and allow us all to work smarter rather than harder. The taxonomy described in this paper is a living document and a reference resource that productions, technologists, and studios can use when developing their own workflows and tools.
