- Abstract
- The International Standardization Committee ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29 WG1, better known as the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), has a long tradition in the creation of image coding standards. More than 27 years after the release of the first JPEG standard ISO/IEC 10918, the JPEG format stands as a synonym for digital pictures.

He is a technical lead/manager at Google, and his recent published work has been with Zopfli, Butteraugli, Guetzli, Gipfeli, WebP lossless, Brotli and Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) XL compression formats and algorithms, and two hashing algorithms, CityHash and HighwayHash. Before joining Google, he was involved in the development of software for neurosurgery and radiation therapy treatment planning.Touradj Ebrahimibio
Touradj Ebrahimi is a professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Lausanne, Switzerland, and heads its multimedia signal-processing group. He is the co-founder of the startup company RayShaper based in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, which is active in computational vision for machine- and human-centric applications. He has been the convener (chairman) of the JPEG Standardization Committee since 2014. His research interests include image and video compression, quality of experience in multimedia, and media security. He is a Fellow of the SPIE and the IEEE and has been a recipient of numerous awards and distinctions, including the IEEE Multimedia Star Innovator Award for his contributions to quality of experience assessment solutions with applications to multimedia standardization.Pierre-Anthony Lemieuxbio
Pierre-Anthony Lemieux co-chairs the High-Throughput JPEG 2000 (HTJ2K) activity in the International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) JTC 1/SC 29/WG 1 committee. He is a partner at Sandflow Consulting, San Mateo, CA, where he works with Hollywood and Silicon Valley based clients on worldwide standards and research and development of software. He has been involved in the entertainment technology ecosystem, from content authoring to consumer devices, and is an active contributor to several standards activities and open source projects. He has a PhD degree in physics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Los Angeles, CA, and a BSc degree from McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada, and is the SMPTE fellow and standards director.Fernando Pereirabio
Fernando Pereira received BS, MSc, and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, Lisbon, Portugal, in 1985, 1988, and 1991, respectively. He is currently with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, IST, and Instituto de Telecomunicações. He has authored or coauthored more than 300 papers. His areas of research interest include visual information analysis, processing, coding and description, and interactive multimedia services. He has been participating in the work of ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and ISO/IEC JPEG for many years, notably as the head of the Portuguese delegation, and the chair of the MPEG and JPEG requirements subgroups.Antonio Pinheirobio
