- Abstract
- Next-generation audio (NGA) will bring a greater sense of reality to the media experience. It will also allow a range of audio personalization options to the user and ensure that audio production elements can be adapted to the range of NGA coding formats. The purpose of this article is to explain the progress that has been made since the specifications of various elements of practical systems were agreed. They include the approach that would allow a common production arrangement to be used to serve the alternative encoding formats and the trials that have taken place with the alternative formats.

She has worked on a wide variety of video projects over the years at RAI, including image processing, video coding, next-generation video formats, and 3D computer graphics. In March 2017, she joined the EBU Technology and Innovation Department where she was involved in activities related to VR and AR. Currently, she is focusing on next-generation audio services and she is coordinating the activities of the EBU Audio System Group.David Woodbio
David Wood is a consultant to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Technology and Innovation, Geneva, Switzerland. He was educated at the University of Southampton, Southampton, U.K., the Popov Institute, Ukra-ine, and the Harvard Business School, Boston, MA. He worked for the BBC and IBA in the U.K. before joining the EBU. He led the ITU groups that prepared the Recommendations for Digital Television, HDTV, and UHDTV.Stefan Meltzerbio
Stefan Meltzer studied electrical engineering at the Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen, Germany. In 1990, he joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS), Erlangen. After working in the field of IC design for several years, he became the project leader for the development of the WorldSpace Satellite Broadcasting System in 1995 and of the XM Satellite Radio Broadcasting System in 1998. In 2000, he joined Coding Technologies, Nuremberg, Germany, as the vice president for business development. In April 2018, he joined Fraunhofer IIS again and is now in-charge of business development for TV broadcast applications.Adrian Murtazabio
Adrian Murtaza received an MSc degree in communication systems from the École Polytech-nique Fédérale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2012, with a thesis on “Backward Compatible Smart and Interactive Audio Transmission.” Upon graduation, he joined Fraunhofer IIS, Erlangen, Germany, as a research engineer. He joined MPEG in 2013 and since then contributed to the development of various audio technical standards in MPEG-D and MPEG-H. He serves as Fraunhofer’s senior standards manager in a number of industry standards bodies, and is the co-author of multiple specifications in those groups. His current role includes extensive work with major broadcasters and streaming service providers in Europe and South America for enabling MPEG-H audio in their ecosystems. He is actively involved in MPEG’s efforts on MPEG-I, focusing on future immersive applications.Tim Addybio
Tim Addy is a senior staff systems engineer with Consumer Entertainment Group, Dolby, based at the European headquarters in London, U.K. He has been involved in the broadcast and media industry for 15 years working for Semtech, Snell and Wilcox, Amberfin, and Dolby, where he worked in various areas such as digital signal processing, software and systems design, and architecture. In his present architecture role at Dolby, he works with broadcasters and media organizations to understand their needs and ensure that workflows from content creation through to consumer playback deliver the content experience. He was the lead architect for the Dolby ATMOS UHD service launch with BT Sport in 2017.Jason Powerbio
Jason Power is the Senior Director, Commercial Partner-ships and Standards, at Dolby, based at the European headquarters in London, U.K. In this role, he works to enable ecosystems for new content experiences, working with partners in content production, service distribution, consumer electronics, and standardization. His current focus is on enabling the market success of next-generation audio and high dynamic range video. His efforts to establish practical broadcast workflows for surround sound were recognized with a Technical Emmy Award in 2006. - Copyright

Available: https://dolbyac4.com/uk/dist/pdf/TVP_AC4_Case_study.phpDolby demonstrated a prototype linear broadcast chain producing content in the serial ADM format and then transmitting it as AC-4 to a consumer TV (Fig. 11). Several of the prototype tools developed by Dolby for this project have been made available open source to assist others in the industry to develop their own tools. Next Steps With AC-4 In several countries, the focus has been shifted from discussing theoretical possibilities of NGA to making ecosystems really come to life, so that consumers can enjoy the benefits. To ensure that AC-4 use cases are well identified and that manufacturers can build appropriate devices, Dolby is supporting the creation of example streams, test vectors, and other materials specific to regional markets. For example, DVB AC-4 test streams for NorDig use cases are now available in the official NorDig Test Plan. DVB AC-4 test streams for French broadcaster use cases were used in the recent FAVN UHDTV plugfest. One key area that is gathering momentum is IBB and HbbTV. HbbTV provides a means for deployment of enhanced services, such as those with NGA, via streaming delivery. This is increasingly attractive as an opportunity for service innovation in a rapid and cost-effective manner. AC-4 is supported in HbbTV version 2.0.2, and the official HbbTV Association Test Suite now includes 28 AC-4 test cases to assist manufacturers in implementing NGA capabilities.23 To continue the work on professional content interchange, a key step will be to validate interoperability of third-party tools to author NGA content for AC-4 emission. It will also be important to apply practical learnings to refine and finalize proposed interchange profiles. EXTERNAL
