- Abstract
- Internet protocol (IP) workflows have arrived and are here to stay. Next to reduced complexity and increased agility, one of the greatest advantages of moving to IP is cost reduction since it permits simple usage of commercially available off-the-shelf IP switches and cables. However, with new imaging technologies such as ultrahigh-definition (UHD)-1/4K, high frame rates, and high dynamic range, we have more pixels to manage, store, and transport. SMPTE ST 2110 supports both uncompressed and compressed videos. With uncompressed video essences, this requires 10 GbE workflows for HD, 25 GbE for UHD-1/4K, and even more for future UHD-2/8K workflows. Currently, many are struggling just to upgrade infrastructures from 1080i or 720p to 1080p60 at 3 Gb/s; handling UHD-1/4K video at 60 frames/sec, 4:2:2, and 10 bits is much more challenging. And with UHD-2/8K on the verge, a future-proof solution must be found. This paper explains how and why the new International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) XS in combination with part 22 of SMPTE ST 2110 for compressed video streams addresses and solves the problems of more pixels over limited bandwidth, latency, and image quality.

bio
Charles Buysschaert holds a master’s degree in electro-mechanical engineering from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. He started his career as an embedded software developer in the automotive industry and then joined the broadcast industry, working at Grass Valley CA. In 2009, he joined intoPIX, Belgium, bringing a complementary software expertise to the development team. He has since created and grown this software team to deliver 100% software-driven products like FastTICO-XS CPU and GPU libraries. He also contributed to the development of Tiny Codec Alliance (TICO) and JPEG XS algorithms mainly in the software modeling aspect.Antonin Descampebio
Antonin Descampe received MSc and PhD degrees, both in electrical engineering, from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Leuven, Belgium, in 2003 and 2008, respectively. He also holds an MSc degree in telecommunications from the Ecole Centrale Paris (ECP), Paris, France. In 2006, he co-founded intoPIX, a leading provider of image and video compression solutions. He is now involved in the development and standardization of new compression technologies at intoPIX. An active member of ISO (JPEG and MPEG) and VSF, and he is one of the project leaders of the JPEG XS standardization within the ISO/IEC SC29 WG1 (also known as “JPEG Committee”). He also holds a position of senior researcher and invited lecturer at Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. His current research interests include image compression, compressed image retrieval, and optimized hardware implementations.Jean-Baptiste Lorentbio
Jean-Baptiste Lorent joined intoPIX in 2007, an innovative technology provider of image processing and compression technologies. Today, he works as the head of marketing and sales, driving intoPIX product roadmap, strategy and business development in electronics and audio visual industries. He most recently held product management positions at intoPIX developing a strong expertise in image/video compression and how to efficiently address the transition to IP/IT in broadcast and pro-AV. He is an active member of VSF, SMPTE, as well as other organizations such as Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) and TICO Alliance. He holds a business engineering master’s degree from the Louvain School of Management (UCLouvain, Belgium). - Keyword(s)
