- Abstract
- The existing 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) packet- switched streaming (PSS) architecture that was developed for 3G and 4G and evolved to carry streaming content with DASH [Dynamic and Adaptive Streaming over Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)], is now seen as too limited for 5G. 3GPP has, therefore, started developing a new media streaming architecture, considering the latest advances in the media industry and the features offered by the 5G system. Recognizing that, most media and video content delivered to the user is provided by several online service providers, the new 3GPP 5G media streaming architecture focuses on different collaboration and deployment models between mobile network operators and media data service providers. These collaboration and deployment models also cater to traditional broadcasters, which increasingly see the need for high-quality contributions via a mobile network, for example, to cover unplanned or transient events. The new architecture supports unicast downlink media data distribution and uplink streaming.

bio
Frédéric Gabin received an MSc degree in electronics and digital telecommunication systems from Telecom ParisTech, Palaiseau, France, in 1997. As a research and standardization engineer with Nortel Networks, his main areas of focus are speech and radio signal processing, followed by 2G/3G dual-mode terminal design. He led a standardization and research project team on 4G for the NEC terminal division. He moved to Ericsson Mobile Platform in 2007 to focus on multimedia standards like Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), 3GPP, and became the chairman of Khronos OpenMax. As part of Ericsson Standardization and Industry, CTO Office, he leads the media reference team and focuses on 5G media aspects. He served as a delegate and chairman of several standardization groups at Khronos, European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), The International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC), DVB, Global System for Mobile communication Association (GSMA), and 3GPP. He is currently the chairman of the 3GPP SA4 Codec and Multimedia Working Group.Thorsten Lohmarbio
Thorsten Lohmar graduated from the Technical University of Aachen, Aachen, Germany, in 1997, where he also received a PhD degree in electrical engineering in 2011. He joined Ericsson, Germany, in 1998, and has worked for several years in different business and Ericsson research units. He worked on a variety of topics related to mobile communication systems and led research projects specifically in the multimedia technologies area. He is currently focused on video delivery and optimizations, including the broadcast distribution of media. He is currently working as an expert for Media Delivery Architecture (mostly) in mobile networks.Gunnar Heikkiläbio
Gunnar Heikkilä is a senior specialist in artificial/machine intelligence at Ericsson Research. He joined Ericsson in 1987. Since 1996 he has focused on user experience quality assessment and measurements, including standardization in 3GPP, International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication (ITU-T), and ETSI. He holds an MSc degree in computer science from the Luleå University of Technology, Luleå, Sweden.Lucia D’Acuntobio
Lucia D’Acunto received a PhD degree in 2012 from the Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands, with a thesis on video streaming over peer-to-peer networks. She now works as a senior research scientist at TNO, focusing on video distribution and on the impact of future internet architectures [e.g., information-centric networking (ICN), software-defined networking (SDN), and 5G] on it. She usually takes the roles of a project or technical lead for EU research projects and contract research projects that TNO conducts for several companies. She also frequently advises European operators on network and TV technologies, contributes to international industry standards (especially in the 3GPP SA4 group, on behalf of Dutch operator KPN) and to 5GPPP and NEM visions on the 5G Media Vertical and pilots. Her research is regularly published in peer-reviewed academic venues and has led to more than 15 patents. Apart from her research activities, she is also responsible for managing TNO’s project portfolio for Immersive Human Communication (with a yearly revenue of about 2M euros).Thomas Stockhammerbio
Thomas Stockhammer received Dipl-Ing and Dr-Ing degrees from the Munich University of Technology, Munich, Germany. He was the visiting researcher at Rensselear Politechnical Institute (RPI), Troy, NY, and the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), San Diego, CA. After acting as a cofounder and the chief executive officer of Novel Mobile Radio (NoMoR) Research for ten years and as a consultant for Siemens mobile, BenQ mobile, LG Electronics, and Digital Fountain, he joined Qualcomm in 2014 as the Director—Technical standards. He has co-authored more than 200 research publications and more than 150 patents and thousands of contributions to standardization efforts. In his day job, he is active and has leadership and rapporteur positions in 3GPP, DVB, Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG), Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Advanced Television Systems Committee, Consumer Technology Association (CTA), ETSI, and the dynamic and adaptive streaming over HTTP-DASH-Industry Forum (IF) in the area of multimedia communication, TV distribution, content delivery protocols, immersive media representation, and adaptive streaming. Among others, he leads the MPEG-I efforts in MPEG. He is the chair of the DASH-IF Technical working group, the rapporteur of the first completed 3GPP virtual and extended reality work, as well as the chairman of the DVB 5G Study Mission. He also received the INCITS Technical Excellence Award in 2013 for his MPEG-DASH work, the 3GPP Excellence Ward 2017 for his work on Enhanced TV, and the CTA Technology and Standards Achievement Award in 2019 for his work on CTA WAVE Device Playback specification. - Keyword(s)
