- Abstract
- UHD-1/4K and UHD-2/8K satellite broadcasts were launched on 1 December 2018 in Japan. One of these services, the broadcast of UHD-2/8K was the first of its kind in the world. This broadcasting system adopts high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) with highly efficient compression performance, a newly developed (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) ISDB-S3 transmission system, which uses the 16APSK modulation scheme and other new technologies. In this paper, we provide details of the new UHD-1/4K and UHD-2/8K services, focusing on standardizing technical specifications and practical ways to introduce new reception systems into households.

bio
Katsuya Hayashi received an associate degree in information technology from the Tsuyama College, National Institute of Technology, Tsuyama, Japan, and joined Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), Tokyo, Japan, in 2000. He was initially engaged in the management of digital broadcasting transmission and reception systems at Tottori, Yamaguchi, and Hiroshima branch broadcasting stations. Since 2017, he has been involved in standardizing the digital broadcasting reception system with the Transmission and Reception Engineering Center, NHK.Kazuhiro Kumamarubio
Kazuhiro Kumamaru received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Tokyo University of Science, Tokyo, Japan, in 2007, the master’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, and joined NHK in 2009. He was engaged in implementing digital broadcasting stations at Hiroshima branch stations from 2009 to 2014. He was engaged in the designing and installation of studio to transmitter link/transmitter to transmitter link (STL/TTL) equipment at the Transmission and Reception Engineering Center from 2014 to 2017. Since 2017, he has been involved in standardizing broadcasting satellite and has been participating in International Telecommunication Union– Radiocommunication (ITU-R) meetings.Shinsuke Yokozawabio
Shinsuke Yokozawa received BE and ME degrees in communication engineering and informatics from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo, Japan, in 2010 and 2012, respectively. He joined NHK in 2012, and has been working with the Science and Technology Research Laboratories since 2015. He is a researcher at the Advanced Transmission Systems Research Division, where his interests include next-generation satellite broadcasting systems. He received the Young Researcher’s Award of Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) in 2020. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), IEICE, and the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE). - Keyword(s)

In each household, the down-converted signal is then converted back to the original frequency at the receiver for viewing on an 8K television. This approach makes it possible to receive 8K broadcasts using existing satellite reception equipment, greatly reducing the labor and cost of refurbishment. Reception Method Using a Receiving System With POF Cable POFs5,6 are used in data centers and elsewhere. We have developed equipment for receiving satellite broadcasting using POFs. Quartz glass singlemode fibers (SMFs) are often used as optical fibers in many broadcasting/communication installations, such as fiber to the home (FTTH). Although the signal attenuation and other characteristics of POFs are inferior to those of glass-based SMFs, their high flexibility and tolerance to shaft misalignment mean that POFs are unaffected by problems common to quartz glass SMFs, such as workability, safety, and bend resistance. In Japan, 64% of apartment blocks consist of smalland medium-sized buildings of five stories or less. In this case, since the transmission distance from the antenna to the television is about 100 m or less, signal attenuation is within an allowable range when using a POF receiving system. Moreover, since POFs are thin and have excellent flexibility compared with conventional coaxial cables, flexible installation is possible. A system using a POF connection is shown in Fig. 12. In an apartment block that is difficult to renovate, an optical transmitter and a receiver are installed alongside the existing receiving equipment, and a new POF cable is installed in the gaps in the piping by exposed wiring.
