Abstract
In anticipation of the advent of UHD-1 (4K)/UHD-2 (8K) broadcasting in Japan, we developed ultrahigh-definition TV (UHDTV) studios to promote UHD content. Regarding UHD-1/4K productions, it was necessary to adapt to simultaneous production of 2K and 4K programs to achieve an efficient workflow. Thus, we used 12G-SDI (SMPTE ST 2082), which is highly compatible with the 2K equipment, and developed a realtime transform device and control system to simultaneously produce high-quality content in International Telecommunication Union-Rec.2020/HDR (high dynamic range) and Rec.709/SDR (standard dynamic range). We designed the transform algorithm based on our studies and experience. Also, to overcome the high bitrate issues of UHD-2/8K, we introduced a mezzanine compression approach in the 8K studio. To interface with various devices, a serial digital interface/internet protocol (SDI/IP) hybrid system was adopted in the studio, where we can produce programs of the highest quality in the world. We discuss the key points of the novel studio designs and highlight certain challenges to be addressed in the future.

Author(s)
Ryokichi Komagata
bio
Ryokichi Komagata joined Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) in 2009. After engaging in newsgathering and program production for four years, he has been focused on the development of production systems with the Engineering Adminis- tration Department. He is mainly responsible for the production studio facility design, especially in the video and lighting system. He developed Japan’s first 4K TV studio, which can simultaneously produce 4K and 2K programs. Currently, his team is developing the sixth 4K TV studio.
Kota Itakura
bio
Kota Itakura joined NHK in 2006 and has been engaged in program production for dramas, music entertainment, and sports. In 2018, he began working with the Engineering Administration Department. He went on to simultaneously design and produce the world’s first 8K TV studio. Currently, he is designing 8K production facilities with a focus on studios or outside broadcasting (OB) vans.
Tsuyoshi Sakiyama
bio
Tsuyoshi Sakiyama is currently in charge of the technical planning and coordination for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games at NHK’s Broadcast Engineering Department. In 2001, he joined NHK, where he worked on acoustic engineering, including 22.2 multichannel audio systems, and development of ultrahigh-definition TV (UHDTV) production equipment, including 8K camera systems. He developed the first model of the 8K single-chip camera system for practical use, for which he received an award from the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE), Japan.
Takashi Nakajima
bio
Takashi Nakajima joined NHK in 1999 and has been engaged in program production for music entertainment, sports, and news coverage. In 2014, he began working in the development of production systems in the Engineering Administration Department. He developed Japan’s first 4K TV studio and file-based workflows. Currently, he is designing the NHK’s new broadcasting center located in Shibuya, Tokyo.
