Abstract
To include regional contents in a national single-frequency network (SFN), the RAI Radiotelevisione Italiana has studied and tested a system configuration that benefits from the multiple physical layer pipes (PLPs) of Digital Video Broadcasting-Second Generation Terrestrial (DVB-T2) standard in a laboratory. According to the proposed solution, in each region, the national programs are transmitted in one PLP, whereas other k PLPs convey the regional contents of a macroregional SFN, formed by a region and the (k–1) surrounding ones. The DVB Single Illumination System standard can be a valid technical solution to distribute such complex signals to SFN transmitters via satellite or terrestrial contribution links in a cost-effective way. This article presents the rules adopted to map content into DVB-T2 PLPs and their application to the Italian case. Furthermore, it describes the end-to-end laboratory setup and the results of tests carried out, showing that a national SFN can broadcast both national and regional contents with high flexibility and spectrum efficiency.

Davide Milanesio is a senior research engineer at Rai Radiotelevisione Italiana, Centro Ricerche, Innovazione Tecnologica e Sperimentazione (CRITS), Torino, Italy. He joined RAI in 1997 and was progressively involved in standardization and on-field technical evaluation of new technologies relevant to radio and TV terrestrial broadcasting, in-home distribution systems, digital networks for TV contribution and distribution, and advanced video streaming protocols over wired and wireless IP networks. He is a member of technical program committees and standardization fora. In Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB), he is currently involved in the DVB-I specification and chairs the TM-HB (Technical Module-Home Broadcast) Group, and is recently pursuing DVB-Single Illumination System (SIS) standardization activity. He is also a member of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) TC100 and CELENEC TC209 committees on cable distribution systems and is the chairman of the corresponding Italian National committee CEI SC100D. He has participated in several European funded and European Space Agency (ESA) projects and is an author of technical publications and presentations at international conferences.
