- Abstract
- MPEG Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) provides formats that are suitable to stream segmented media content over HTTP. DASH clients follow a client-pull paradigm by adapting their requests based on the available bandwidth and other local resources. This has proven to be easier to deploy over content delivery network infrastructure than server-push technologies. However, this decentralized nature introduces new challenges such as offering a consistent and higher quality of service for premium users. MPEG addresses this issue in the recently published MPEG-DASH part 5, Server and Network-Assisted DASH (SAND). The key features of SAND are asynchronous network-to-client and network-to-network communication of quality-related assisting information. This way, the quality of services can be improved by the DASH clients reacting realtime to the assistance and recommendation sent by the service provider. In addition, DASH-Industry Forum (DASH-IF) is further defining interoperable guidelines to optimize SAND deployments in a variety of environments: home network, over-the-top, and so on. DASH-IF is expected to publish this new interoperable guideline by the end of 2017.

We evaluate for each step (and each strategy) the resulting representation choices that the clients should take. Figures 2–5 show the bandwidth taken by each client for each strategy and for all the steps in the scenario. We can easily see that we obtain different behavior according to the chosen strategy. This is exactly the intent of allowing a choice of allocation strategy: depending on the preferences, it is possible to adjust the clients’ behavior. MPEG-DASH Standardization For the cooperation to be effective between devices from several vendors, the required parameters and the algorithms have to be shared by all the involved HAS clients of the local network. MPEG has released a standard, DASH - part 11 to define how to deliver adaptive streaming content. The SAND (Server and Network Assisted DASH) core experiment was launched to standardize means of improving delivery through assistance of the client. Within this context, the cooperation of DASH clients has been introduced and the definition of the required parameters has been drawn. In addition, several strategies of cooperation algorithms have been specified. The work done in this core experiment leads to a new part of the MPEG-DASH standard, called DASH–part 5, that is currently in the approval process at ISO under the reference ISO/IEC FDIS 23009-5. Conclusion In this paper, we have focused on the known issues of HAS clients competing for bandwidth over the home broadband access and introduced two new tools to EXTERNAL
