- Abstract
- “Not just more pixels—but better pixels,” is the accepted mantra driving current High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology. With multiple electro-optical transfer functions (EOTFs) and color gamut standards driving HDR content creation and display, and issues of backward compatibility with BT.709/ standard dynamic range (SDR) displays, the viewer experience in such an interoperable environment needs closer attention. In particular, contouring due to bit-depth loss or incorrect tone mapping, contrast loss due to EOTF mismatch, and possible enhancement of compression artifacts in brighter image regions have to be analyzed and quantified in order to assist content creators in monitoring video quality in a diverse HDR ecosystem.
