- Abstract
- Stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) content essentially brings to the viewer a binocular cue to better understand the depth of a scene. A disparity map associated with the stereoscopic content is key data to ensure that the 3D effect is well accepted by the user. In this paper, the limitations of the human vision system in terms of binocular cue acceptance are presented. We explain when specific video processing can improve the quality of the experience. Several uses cases, either in post-production or on the end-user side, are presented. All of them use the dense disparity map as additional input data. Means to generate this disparity map are introduced. Then, technical details of disparitybased algorithms are presented, as well as their positioning in the global 3D workflow. Some standardization challenges are also addressed.
