Abstract
While the expansion of shock waves in gases follows the Cranz model law very closely and thus may be classed as pseudostationary, the same statement cannot be expected automatically to apply to the origin and expansion of turbulence areas. Various authors (e.g., Howard and Matthews) have shown through single exposures that pseudo-stationary expansion can be assumed nevertheless to apply also to turbulence areas. In continuation of the experimental work of H. Schardin, the expansion of turbulence on an edge in the shock-wave tube was examined with the aid of multiple-spark cameras, making observations both according to principles of focused shadow optics and of interference optics. These experiments showed that the expansion of turbulence is practically pseudostationary — i.e., after a certain time (in our experiments about 20 μsec has gone by); the velocity of expansion of the vortex becomes constant. The substantial influence of viscosity is thus limited to the very first phase of the formation of turbulence.
