Abstract
Series of pictures of bow waves and boundary layers of various bodies in hypersonic flows of N2, air or CO2 have been taken with the help of a differential interferometer working with Wollaston prisms and lenses and a 24-spark high-speed camera. The flows have been produced in a small hypersonic shock tube at Mach numbers between 4 and 8, stagnation temperatures between 1000 K and 4000 K and gas densities between 3 × 10-4 and 10-1 of the normal density. Flow durations were between 4 × 10-5 and 8 × 10-4 sec. Spark frequencies were employed up to 2.5 × 105 cps in the same spark gap. The separation of the pictures was obtained on rotating film. The optical arrangement allowed the utilization of an extended light source.
