- Abstract
- The most recent work on the cinemicroscopy of electrically exploded wires has been concerned with the investigation of the effect of impurities in the wire upon the observed behavior when the wire is exploded. The bubble formation phenomenon which leads to the formation of transverse striations has been shown to be drastically modified by the presence of a small amount of thorium oxide in the tungsten wire. Animated cinemicroscopic observations with the high-speed framing camera at 25× magnification illustrate this effect. The behavior of an electrical discharge through a thin metallic film can be followed both by electrical monitoring and by photographic observation with a high-speed framing camera. Two types of optical phenomena are observed. The first occurs quickly, coinciding with an initial current pulse, and is related to the conduction process through the film. The second, a surface phenomenon, yields a second current pulse when the voltage across the electrodes exceeds a critical value. These phenomena are illustrated with typical observations. Interpretations are suggested.
