Abstract
By impact of flat high-velocity projectiles, or fast shaped-charge jets, shocks of higher strength may be produced in solid targets than by direct attack with high explosives. Impact pressures in the 1-Mb range are reported for metals, water and geological formations. Three experimental methods are used to measure shock compressibility: (1) projectile impact (U.S.S.R.); (2) free surface movement (Los Alamos Lab); and (3) flash radiographic (St.-Louis Laboratoire). Results obtained from experiments show that the shock velocity Us for nearly all tested materials can be represented by a linear relation Us = Uo + λUp within a particle velocity range Up = 1 to 5 mm/μsec, where λ ≈ 1.6, even for materials of very different nature. Uo differs generally noticeably from the sonic velocity. For compact metals, experimental Uo-values accord with a universal function of the argument (Z— 10)/p, where Z is the atomic number and p the density of the metal.
