Abstract: For certain applications of flash radiography, particularly diffraction studies, the x-ray intensity of a single flash is not sufficient for direct photographic registration. A further increase of flash specific intensity is not to be expected because of the limited current density at the anode and the required short flash duration, so an improvement of sensitivity of registration might be expected to open new fields of application to flash radiography. One possibility of realizing this is given by the electronic x-ray image intensifier. The authors study the possibilities of application of such a device in flash technique. A slight loss in definition must be accepted, but this is nearly the same as in the stationary case. The image blur due to development of space charge in the electron optics by high impulse loads is negligible for dose rates up to 105 roentgen/sec. Using an objective of extremely high aperture and highly sensitive film, the gain in sensitivity is about a factor of 50, compared with direct registration using a highly sensitive film. The method will be of interest not only for single-flash photography but also for cinematography with x-ray flashes.
