- Abstract
- In a number of devices for high-speed motion-picture photography, the mirror scanning system comprises inclined mirrors, the reflecting surfaces of which are not parallel to their axes of rotation. Inclined light beams are also used. The design of such systems requires knowledge of the mechanism of image construction under the particular conditions obtaining. The paper deals with the theoretical problems confronting the designer in this field. Image loci for these cases of scanning are found. Consideration is also given to the shape of the focal surface to be chosen in order to secure the required photographic quality of the image and the accuracy of measurements. Expressions for the rate of motion of the image for these kinds of mirror scanning are given in general form. The possible distortions of the photographic record, and methods for their estimation are also discussed. Comparisons are made of different mirror scanning systems with inclined mirrors and inclined light beams, that are now in use.
