Abstract
The brightness of the spark discharge channel in different gases was investigated by a newly developed photoelectric method. It was shown that for sufficiently high energy density in the discharge channel its brightness approached a limiting value which was dependent on the type of gas filling. The magnitude of the limiting brightness in xenon was 11.106 stilb*; in air, 17.106 stilb; in argon, 22.106 stilb; in nitrogen, 32.106 stilb; and in helium, 37.106 stilb. A possible way of increasing the brightness of the spark discharge is to restrict its channel by the walls of a capillary. Brightnesses up to 50.106 stilb were obtained in capillary spark discharges.
