Abstract
This paper describes research at F.V.R.D.E.* into the luminous characteristics of spark discharges. Constructional details of an extremely low-inductance capacitor array, using a “disc transmission line,” are examined. A method for calculating the approximate inductance of such arrays is given. Three types of discharge gap are described and evaluated. Current and brightness waveforms for discharges in air are presented. A possible shock heating mechanism for the discharge channel is considered. A limit to the maximum achievable luminance for a discharge in air at atmospheric pressure is postulated.
