Abstract: The mass market necessarily is a price market, since only in the low-price brackets are sufficient purchasers found to warrant large volume production. Low cost can be achieved while high relative value is maintained, only if the engineering adheres carefully to these fundamentals: (a) elimination of unnecessary features; (b) determination of acceptable minimum levels of performance; (c) provision for attractive external appearance; (d) design of parts for mass production by proper selection of dimensional tolerances, careful tooling to insure such tolerances, and the use of suitable materials; (e) the establishment of economical assembly-line procedure by considering assembly problems from the inception of parts design, providing accurate assembly fixtures, and maintaining adequate process inspection throughout manufacture.
