Coding Performance of Motion-Compensated Interframe, Interfield, and Intrafield Adaptive Prediction Coding for Composite and Component TV Signals

- This paper discusses the characteristics and performance of a new high-efficiency coding method for broadcast TV signals; i.e., motion-compensated interframe, interfield, and intrafield adaptive prediction coding. This method aims to transmit a broadcast TV program at a rate of lower than 30 Mbit/sec. Various objective and subjective tests were performed with coded pictures, using an experimental and newly developed digital TV coding system. High average scores of 4.6 and 4.9 at 15 Mbit/sec and 30 Mbit/sec respectively on a 5-point impairment scale were attained for composite moving test pictures. In addition, the component-coded pictures were confirmed to be superior to the composite-coded pictures.
