Abstract: General-purpose computers have now reached suficient levels of power to ofler the ability to process video signals in real time, in such a manner that they can replace the specialized computer hardware that has been employed. Simultaneously, we are seeing the emergence of specialized digital hardware for film post-production, competing with the general-purpose computers that have been applied to the process for the last couple of yeurs. After a review of the progress over the last two decades in the application of digital computing hardware to video and film post-production, the author discusses both the benefits of general-purpose computers in these areas and some of the problems, and concludes with some questions that remain to be resolved.
