- Personal computer (PC)-based systems have made some inroads into the professional video production arena in recent years, serving primarily as nonlinear editing and graphics workstations. However, PCs have thus far failed to replace single-function legacy equipment, instead they function with existing products such as video switchers, digital video effects systems, character generators, and audio mixers. The true benefits of the PC in video production will not he realized until the entire production process is integrated into one system. This step will use the economics of the general purpose PC to dramatically decrease the cost of video production, while making the entire process easier to learn and practice. Integration will also further expand the toolset available to producers by providing a myriad of tools from hundreds of developers, all for one platform. This paper examines the reasons why PC-based systems have failed thus far to make this step and examines some solutions to these problems.

Steve Hartford vice-president of software development for Play Incorporated, Rancho Cordova, Calif. where he ovcrsees the company's professional and consumer software groups. In 1981, he founded Proco Enterprises, a personal computer software development company. Proco created several productivity and entertainment titles for the Radio Shack Color Computer and the Commodore Amiga during the 1980s. Hartford was one of the original poineers of realtime digital video compression techniques in the mid- 1980s. He received a B.S. in applied mathematics at the University of California, San Diego, in 1989, after which he joined NewTek, Inc. in Topeka, Kans. At NewTek, he was one of the original designers and programmers of the Video Toaster. a product widely regarded as the first realtime desktop video system. In 1993, Hartford received a Prime Time Enimy award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his work on the Video Toaster. He left NewTek, Inc., with other senior staff in 1994 to become a founder of Play Incorporated. - Copyright
