- Abstract
- Increased use of compressed video signals in broadcasting has led to the expectation that bit rates will fall and quality will be maintained. Although it is true that compression encoders have decreased in cost and continue to improve in performance, the overall performance of a digital chain that may include more than one compression stage remains limited by practical factors that concern the quality of the video input to the compressor. If this input is impaired, for example, by noise, interference, composite decoding, and film scanning artifacts, etc., the subsequent compression process may not perform well. This paper explores some of the factors that affect the performance of practical MPEG-2 compression systems and suggestions for dealing with them.

bio
Gordon M. Drury holds bachelor's degrees in electronic engineering and humanities. He has worked in the telecommunications and broadcasting industries for over 30 years. Drury began his career in 1967, working in R & D for telecommunications, including early compression systems for television. During the 1980s he was a senior member of a development team studying HDTV and its practical introduction. He served on a number of CCIR and EBU committees and has been involved in the technical and other modules of DVB. He is also a member of the Steering Board of the Digital Television Group (DTG) that facilitated the launch of terrestrial digital television in the U.K. In 1995, Drury was appointed vice-president, technology at News Digital Systems (NDS) and is now vice-president, business affairs at Tandberg Television, where his responsibilities include new business development. Drury is a Fellow of the U.K. Institution of Electrical Engineers and a member of both the Royal Television Society and SMPTE. - Copyright
