Abstract
The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital VSB transmission was designed for terrestrial broadcast, but also provides a simple, user friendly, and easily implemented interface for any device that can supply an ATSC transport stream to drive the DTV as a display. It also is the basis for a range of data and multimedia applications just now under development. This paper starts with a few fundamentals of VSB, with special emphasis on the features that make the consumer interface possible. It then gives some examples of the use of VSB for data and consumer interfaces.
