- Abstract
- This paper reports on a newly developed 16:9 wide-aspect-ratio 525-line progressive-scanning camera that incorporates 4:2:2:4 in its signal transmission, and on a prototype production system that employs this camera. A progressive-to-interlace (PI) conversion cancels the aliasing component and converts the [4:2:2] x 2 signals into currently used interlace signals. In addition, with a unilateral channel, the 4:2:2 signal can be used as it is. This system has been designed to use existing devices designed for interlace components so as to offer excellent performance and compatibility with the conventional interlace system. Also discussed is the videotaping of a sports event using the prototype system. This procedure can also be used for current 4:3 aspect-ratio, 525-line interlace production systems, and therefore provides a flexible way to manage the transition from the conventional 4:3 screen to the 16:9 wide screen. Moreover, it is not restricted to Japan's second-generation enhanced television (EDTV-II), but can be easily converted to new media forms such as high-definition television (HDTV) and advanced television (ATV) in the U.S.
