Abstract: A full HDTV facility overhaul is expensive, and the cost is hard to justify without accurate viewer-count estimates. On the other hand, using a hit-stream splicer to insert local content into a passed-through network signal greatly restricts local branding. The most economical and flexible option is to operate in component digital, a format fully compatible with MPEG-2 compression. Remaining in component digital from start to finish allows local broadcasters to avoid conversions and maintain signal quality, and is, therefore, the clear choice for facility design.

Don Thompson is director of marketing for Leitch Technology Corp. With an extensive background in electronics, he joined Leitch's U.S. division, Leitch Incorporated (LI) in 1982 and became vice-president in 1985. Shortly after Leitch acquired HEDCO, a California manufacturer of routing switchers, Thompson was appointed HEDCO's CEO and chairman of the board. He was successful in expanding HEDCO's market share and, when the company was merged into Leitch in 1991, was instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition. Thompson was a key contributor to the development of Leitch's current router product line. He has directed LI marketing since 1991 and currently directs the corporate marketing strategy worldwide. Thompson is a member of SMPTE.

Michel Proulx co-wrote this paper while working at Leitch as director of engineering, routing switchers, and distribution. He is now director of product development for Miranda Technologies based in Montreal, Canada. Proulx holds a B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. He is a member of SMPTE and has served on the model HDTV station committee.
