Abstract: The first application of a digital computer to television automatic switching control has been developed under CBS auspices and went into operation on December 31, 1960. The resulting system offers a considerable advance over previously-used techniques with respect to functional capacity, ease of revision of program schedule, and adaptability to changes in operating practice. In meeting these stringent requirements, the computer approach proves to be economically sound, offering features unattainable by other means except at prohibitive cost. The present paper describes the theoretical considerations relevant to this application.
