Gary Tonge received his B.Sc from the Electronics Department of Southampton University in 1977. He went on to the Applied Mathemaitics Department of the same university to research into theoretical aspects of energy conversion for his Ph.D. In 1980 he joined the Independent Broadcasting Authority to work on digital television. Initial work on video data-rate reduction led to an interest in sampling theory and multidimensional filter design. More recently his efforts have been directed towards signal processing for higher definition television. He is currently a Senior Engineer in the Video and Colour Section of the IBA.
