Abstract
Interfacing video to graphics workstations is a technology that has existed for some time. However, common acceptance and usage of the technology is in its infancy. Just four years ago recording two-dimensional motion on video tape was a revolutionary capability. Today increasingly sophisticated video technologies are beginning to emerge, enabling engineers, scientists and commercial animators to generate complex three-dimensional objects on a graphics workstation and then record them on video tape. Engineers and scientists are beginning to take advantage of commercial video production techniques previously too expensive to be practical. As video technology continues to expand, graphics workstations linked to video equipment will be used for a broad range of applications, including analysis, documentation, publishing and education.

David Knierim is a principal engineer at Tektronix Interactive Technologies Division, based in Wilsonville, Oregon. A ten-year veteran at Tek, he's worked primarily on designing graphics systems, and holds six patents in this area. For the past year he's worked on interfacing video to high-resolution graphics workstations. He has a pending patent application on a gamma compensating spacial filter which is used in converting high resolution images to video resolution. Knierim holds a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of California, Davis, and a master's degree in electronic engineering from Oregon State University.
