- Abstract
- An HDTV Digital VTR is developed, based on the SMPTE-240M/BTA-S001 studio standard and the NHK guideline for HDTV-DVTRs. An HDTV signal digitized at 1.2Gb/s is recorded on 8 channels. A word error rate of less than 5 × 10 −5 is achieved by using a 1-inch metal particle tape on open reels, sputtered amorphous video heads and equalizers with 5-tap transversal filters. With the help of tape speed information obtained from the capstan-servo-system, stable clock recovery is assured for shuttle speeds ranging from −10 times to +10 times normal speed.

Yoshizumi Eto received his B.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees both from Tokyo University in 1966 and 1977 respectively. Since joining Central Research Laboratory of Hitachi Ltd. in 1966, he has been engaged in developing home VTRs, TV cameras, facsimile modems and digital TV equipment. Currently he is a chief researcher of the fifth department in his laboratory, managing the research activities for future TV technologies. He is a member of SMPTE, IEEE, the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan and the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.Masuo UmemotoCentral Research Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd. Mosuo Umemoto received his B.S.E.E. degree from Kyoto Technical University in 1969. Since joining Central Reserach Laboratory of Hitachi Ltd. in 1969, he has been engaged in the research activities for home VTRs, PCM tape recorders, solid state cameras and digital VTRs. His research interests are modulation codes and highly reliable reproducing circuits for magnetic recording. He is a member of the Institute of Television Engineers of Japan. - Copyright
