- Abstract
- One of our charges as engineers has been to reduce or eliminate noise from our systems. To employ noise as a means of maintaining equipment seems at first, ludicrous; however, true random noise can be a very useful and time saving entity. The engineer has three types of noise to choose from: white, pink, and USASI. Each offers specific benefits. Through understanding random noise and how it is generated, engineers can apply this newly discovered test signal to a variety of routine maintenance procedures. For the television or motion picture engineer, routine maintenance procedures have doubled with the advent of stereo. At one time, the audio “went along for the ride” as the major concern was getting the video right. Stereo audio has brought with it a whole new list of considerations, and many can be addressed using stereo noise as a test signal.
