- Abstract
- Television cameras convert reflected visible light into electrical signals, processes them, and displays the image on a video monitor. Infrared (IR) cameras collect long wavelength radiated light and convert it into electrical signals that can be displayed on a remote TV screen. Infrared cameras, therefore, do not require any source of light to produce an image because the subject itself is the light. This article is intended to be an introduction to infrared video and the electromagnetic spectrum it occupies. Also discussed is basic IR concepts, a history of IR technology, the future of IR imaging, applications of IR imaging to television, and other commercial uses.

James B. Van Anda is vice-president of Digital Imaging Inc., a company that specializes in digital processing for infrared and other imaging systems. Prior to joining Digital Imaging. Van Andu was responsible for Engineering Technology at Westinghouse Elecrro-Optical Systems — Orlando. where he directed the next generation FLIR Technology group. He has over 20 years experience in Imaging Technology including infrared, visible, and acoustic images. He is a member of SMPTE and serves on the SMPTE Working Group for High Definition TV for Electronic Production.Charles L. CarterWestinghouse Electro-Optical Systems — Orlando Orlando, Fla.bio
Charles Carter is program manager for the second generation advance FLIR project at Westinghouse Electro-Optical Systems — Orlando, Florida. He directs the activities of the engineers and scientists that develop the new designs for the state-of-the-art thermal imaging cameras and systems. Prior to this he was responsible for the design. development and testing of electronic circuits and systems at Parks-Jagggers Aerospace. He has spent the past seven years in high-speed analog and video processing. He also has broad experience in video camera (B&W, color, solid state, high resolution) design, video systems testing, and video recording. - Copyright
