Abstract
The television requirements for NASA at the Kennedy Space Center provide a unique opportunity for systems design and development. Not only must the systems operate under extremely hostile environmental conditions they must also provide transmission and signal distribution over a wide geographical area, with minimal impact to the environment. The goal of the television plant at KSC is to provide to the various users, including the launch team, other NASA Centers, and the media, a NTSC RS-170 television signal of the highest possible quality, to act as source material for image analysis, media programming and launch commit criteria decisions. The television and transmission systems, much like America's space program, have developed through an evolutionary process, with remnants of 1960's technology meshing efficiently with todays state-of-the-art systems and components. The future promises even greater challenges. This paper will describe the systems and philosophy for television at the Kennedy Space Center.

Charles T. Brown has worked for a number of major corporations including, General Electric, Martin Marietta Aerospace, RCA, and Lockheed Aerospace. He received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Hampton University and has a Masters Degree in Space Technology and Engineering Management, both from the Florida Institute of Technology. His career started with GE where he spent several years in the Advanced Development Department and received several patents for his work in the use of the VIR circuit for television receivers. He has worked on many advanced television systems, including the TADS/PNVS, while with Martin Marietta. He has been actively involved in television systems design for KSC since the early 1980s. A major project, recently completed, was us the NASA site manager for the first HDTV tracking coverage of a Shuttle mission. Currently he is actively involved in the development of a fiber optic transmission system for the remote control of camera, pan and tiltfunctions, and the transmission of HDTV for TV for tracking Shuttle launches.
