Abstract: An HDTV base band video signal and four digital audio signals can be recorded more than 63 minutes onto a newly introduced 1/2 inch MP tape cassette, which is slightly larger than a conventional VHS cassette. Digital signal processing techniques such as time compression, time expansion, digital filtering and signal shuffling are fully introduced in order to record a large amount of information onto the small cassette tape efficiently. A newly developed pre-amp IC, pre-amps within the rotating drum system and automatic equalization for the video system, and a new error detection strategy for the PCM audio system have been introduced to meet the demand for sufficient performance. Many operating functions have been considered for this VTR in order to apply it not only for industrial use but also for professional use.
