Abstract
An HDTV base band video signal and four digital audio signals can be recorded more than 63 minutes onto a newly introduced 1/2 inch MP tape cassette, which is slightly larger than a conventional VHS cassette. Digital signal processing techniques such as time compression, time expansion, digital filtering and signal shuffling are fully introduced in order to record a large amount of information onto the small cassette tape efficiently. A newly developed pre-amp IC, pre-amps within the rotating drum system and automatic equalization for the video system, and a new error detection strategy for the PCM audio system have been introduced to meet the demand for sufficient performance. Many operating functions have been considered for this VTR in order to apply it not only for industrial use but also for professional use.

Shigeo Kizu was born in Shizuoka, Japan in 1949. He graduated broadcasting technologies from Nippon Electronics College. He joined the Recording Media and systems Laboratory of Toshiba Research and Development Center in 1982. He has since transferred to the Video Systems and Technology Laboratory. He has been engaged in reserch and development on magnetic recording systems, especially HDTV VTRs.

Naoki Endo was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1957. He received an M.S. degree in physics from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1981. He joined Toshiba Research and Development Center in 1981. There. he has been engaged in research on digital magnetic recording with special emphasis on error correction technologies and modulation methods. Endo is a member of the Institute of the Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan.
Keisuke OgiToshiba Corporation Research and Development Center Kawasaki, Japan
bio
Keisuke Ogi joined the Electronics Equipment Laboratory of Research and Development Center of Toshiba Co. in 1972. There, he designed the equipment for information systems. Since then, he has joined the Video Systems and Technology Laboratory. He is currently working on the development of magnetic recording systems. He received the M.S. degree of Electronic Engineering from the University of Waseda, Tokyo, Japan.
