Abstract
The paper describes a prototype High Definition Digital Multi Effects (HDDME) unit conforming to the SMPTE 240M standard for 1125/60 high definition production systems. The unit is intended to be integrated with other electronic production equipment to replace optical effects in film production and to provide transparent and high quality linear picture manipulation for wide screen applications. The use of the HDDME in both the post production phase and the real-time phase of the demonstrations shown at NAB in April 1989 and at Montreux 1989 is also described. These demonstrations showed the ability of the unit to provide rapid generation and modification of effects as a post production tool and also to be used as a tool to allow actors to interact with pre-recorded material.

David Hedley gruduated with an honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Loughborough University of Technology in 1981. As a part of the course he spent one year at the Independent Broadcast Authority near Winchester. England. Upon graduation he joined the Advanced Development Department of Sony Broadcast Ltd., and since 1986 has been a Principal Engineer within the department. His work has been in the areas of digital signal processing techniques for digital video and audio recording and for high definition video systems, with special interest in microprocessor applications and digital video effects. He is currently the project leader on the High Definition Digital Multi Effects unit.

John W. Richards graduated with an honours degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Leeds in 1973, and in 1978 was awarded the degree of Master of Technology at Brunel University where his major field of study has been concerned with digital filtering techniques. In 1973 he joined the Audio Department of the EMI Central Research Laboratories to work in the areas of analogue and digital signal processing and computer simulation applied to professional audio equipment for digital audio mixing and automated record testing. During 1983 he moved to the Advanced Developments Department of Sony Broadcast Ltd., where from 1984 he has led one of the research and development groups. From 1987 he has held the position of Section Manager within the department. His work has been in the areas of digital signal processing techniques for high definition video systems. standards conversion and digital video effects. He is a member of the I.E.E., I.E.E.E., andthe Audio Engineering
