Abstract: On September 5, 1964, the following appeared in the Montreal Gazette: “Noise and junk are perhaps the most aggravating aspects of the New York World's Fair. Both are everywhere. Carny barkers, recorded music, horns, helicopters, spiels-on-tape, even the magnified grunts of a gorilla—they come with the regularity of Chinese torture. There is only one word to describe it all—shattering.”
