Abstract
The science of room acoustics is not exact, and it is not possible to completely predict the properties of a music studio or concert hall from theoretical considerations. Acoustic treatment is individual and expensive, while modifications to achieve the required quality can add greatly to the cost. Acoustic scaling is a technique which permits the evaluation of a design in advance by making precise measurements on a scale model of the proposed studio or hall. This paper describes the precautions which must be taken in the construction of the model, and the equipment and experimental methods used for acoustic measurements. A number of conditions predicted by the model have been verified in practice, even though the conventional theory could not have anticipated them.
