- Abstract
- The 120th SMPTE Technical Conference held in New York in October 1978 was attended by a delegation from the People's Republic of China. This was the first Conference at which the People's Republic had been represented. Then, in April 1979, the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China invited a group of individuals recognized as leaders in motion-picture film production and television technology to participate in a scientific and cultural exchange program between the United States and China as guests of the PRC. The invitation was accepted by Sidney P. Solow, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Consolidated Film Industries, Hollywood, Milton Forman, Consultant, Beverly Hills, and by SMPTE officers, President Robert M. Smith of DuArt Film Laboratories, Television Affairs Vice-President Frederick M. Remley, Jr., of University of Michigan's Television Center, and Past President William D. Hedden of Calvin Communications. Those individuals who were in a position to accept the invitation from the Ministry of Culture are all members of the SMPTE. During their stay in China, they were the honored guests of the People's Republic; however all traveling and incidental expenses were the responsibility of each individual concerned. Each member of the group was deeply aware of the significance of this visit and its main purpose — that of bringing people in the motion-picture and television industries in the PRC into close cooperation with those in the United States. One of their most important objectives was that of encouraging the scientific and technical people of the PRC to work within the SMPTE, the International Standardization Organization (ISO), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The intimate story of their observations and activities in the People's Republic of China is told below by the authors of this report.
