Abstract: This paper describes the Material eXchange Format (MXF) currently under development by the Pro-MPEG forum and the AAF (Advanced Authoring Format) Association. An MXF file is a “wrapper” containing audio-visual material in a playable stream format. Each file contains a comprehensive metadata structure together with component parts that enable MXF files to be written and read directly by AAF-compliant hardware and software tools. The entire coding structure is based on the recently approved SMPTE standards relating to metadata coding using the KLV syntax and standardized metadata dictionary items. At the time this paper was written, the work was progressing to conclusion, but not yet complete. Therefore, some aspects described represent work in progress and may be subject to change in the final specification. This paper will describe the MXF format with particular emphasis on the file data structure and modeling for the metadata.

Jim Wilkinson began his career in broadcasting at IBA's Engineering Headquarters in 1974. During his tenure at IBA, he worked on DICE, video compression using DPCM at 34 Mbits/sec, and other video projects. In 1979 he joined the newly created Advanced Development Laboratories of Sony Broadcast as one of the founding members and where he continues to work. Since joining Sony he has worked in the areas of digital video recording, video bit rate reduction, digital image processing, and digital audio. Wilkinson has participated in many standards activities in the AES, SMPTE, and EBU. He was an active and prolific member of the EBU/SMPTE Task Force and is now active within SMPTE on the follow-up work now being undertaken, with particular emphasis on metadata and file/stream formats. He is chairman of the File Interchange working group of Pro-MPEG (recently joined by members of the AAF Association and the EBU). In 1995 SMPTE awarded Wilkinson the Alexander M. Poniatoff Gold Medal for Technical Excellence. He is a member of the IEE, IEEE, AES, and SMPTE.
