- Abstract
- Interactive digital TV services are now considered the key element to introduce digital TV services and to encourage customers to invest in new digital TV appliances. Some time ago, the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) forum, which already produced a harmonized family of technical standards including return channels using telecom networks technologies (PSTN, GSM, and ISDN), decided to engage in the work of defining return channels using the same medium as the broadcast “downstream” one. Thus, the cable and then the satellite platforms have been endowed with their dedicated return channel, and it is now possible to provide the remaining terrestrial platform with a dedicated return channel. The result of this work is called DVB-RCT (Return Channel for Terrestrial system) and is intended to provide standard specification for interactivity in the UHF/VHF bands. Using the newly defined DVB-RCT standard as a companion of the worldwide proven, recognized, and adopted terrestrial DVB system, DVB-T is no longer limited to unidirectional broadcast. It can become a true terrestrial wireless interactive system. Following a general presentation of the DVB-RCT technical specifications, two projects dealing with the future of the DVB-RCT standard are presented in this paper.

bio
Gerard Faria is the scientific director of Harris Broadcast Europe-Rennes. He graduated in 1978 from the Technical University of Paris VI (France). In 1988, after more than ten years of practical engineering experience in digital design, he was one of the ITIS company founders. There, he managed a team of R&D engineers and conceived most of the company's DAB and DVB products. Faria's current responsibility is management of the company's contributions to various European collaborative research projects (VALIDATE, MOTIVATE, iTTi, Witness, MCP, and IM4DTTV). He is also its representative to international conferences, technical seminars, and forums, driving the DAB and DVB technologies.Fabio Scalisebio
Fabio Scalise received a degree in electrical engineering at Milano Politechnic in February 1990. He then joined STMicroelectronics as a system engineer in the field of advanced TV, focusing on HDTV, motion estimation and, since 1992, on digital terrestrial TV. He is currently head of the system design team in the field of digital communication. From 1995 to 1998, he was responsible for the European project “DVBird,” prototyping the first chip set for the DVB-T standard. From 1998 to 1999, he was responsible for the iTTi project, specifying a low-bit-rate return channel in the UHF band based on S-FDMA techniques. Since then. Scalise has been chairman of the DVB-RCT technical group defining the DVB standard for terrestrial return channel for interactive TV. He presented a white paper on the subject at NAB 2001 in Las Vegas, NV. - Copyright
