Abstract: New digital processing capabilities over the last decade have resulted in higher expectations from television, including increased channel capacity and video and audio quality improvements. However, one of the first viewer determinates of television program quality has proven to be the proper and consistent synchronization of the visual and audio signal elements, otherwise referred to as lip-sync timing. This paper will provide a brief overview of the reasons for the increasing audio-to-video delay problems, discuss the thresholds for audio-to-video delay perceptibility that have been accepted in recent documented studies, and introduce a new “in-service” A/V delay measurement and auto-correction method based on digital watermarking of video signals.

Tom Tucker is the U.S. regional marketing manager for Video Products at Tektronix, Inc., located in Beaverton, OR. Tucker studied electronic engineering and marketing and has been instrumental in the development and marketing of video measurement products for most of his 25 years at Tektronix. Tucker has also been responsible for video product business development in the Pacific Rim and Latin regions. He has authored several articles in major trade journals.
Dan Baker
bio
Dan Baker has been with Tektronix for 29 years working in the Video Test and Measurement division the entire time. A member of SMPTE and IEEE, he has presented several papers at various conferences. He has patents in video test, signal processing, and password security. Baker has an MSEE degree from Oregon State University and a BSEE from the University of Portland.
