- The ATSC Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) provides certain information in a digital television (DTV) broadcast stream that helps a DTV receiver correctly identify and tune to the virtual channels in the broadcast stream. In situations where a DTV signal is received and retransmitted, some of the PSIP information may need to be translated in order to accurately reflect the parameters of the new transmission. This paper proposes an in-band control mechanism that uses the broadcast stream itself to carry remote control information to a PSIP translation system in such cases, and it discusses the advantages of this method over others.

Jian Shen is an engineering manager at Triveni Digital, Inc., in Princeton Junction, NJ, where he is leading the development of the Stream Bridge product line for DTV metadata processing. Prior to joining Triveni Digital in 2000, he worked at Johnson & Johnson's Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Co. for eight years, specializing in automated medical systems and medical information management software development. He has researched and developed application systems and software for digital TV broadcasting, image analysis, expert system, and instrument automation. Shen received Ph.D. and M.S. degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and a Bachelor of Engineering Science degree from Hefei University of Technology in China. Mark Corl has been working in the software engineering field for nearly 20 years. His experience covers a broad variety of applications from marine geophysical data acquisition to the architecture of very high speed print servers. Corl currently manages Triveni's metadata generation and control systems. Gomer Thomas is a senior member of the technical staff at Triveni Digital, where his responsibilities include systems engineering and product management for the Sky Scraper data broadcast product line. He has extensive domain knowledge in digital television technology and standards, especially in the areas of SI/PSI/PSIP, data broadcasting, and data-enhanced television programming. He represents Triveni Digital on the ATSC specialist groups T3/S8 (transport) and T3/S13 (data broadcasting), and is chair of the ATSC ad hoc group on Metadata for Advanced EPG Functionality. Thomas has more than 15 years of industrial experience in distributed data management, system design for high-performance e-commerce websites, and software design for realtime data acquisition and process control systems. - Copyright
